From the Director

What a great fall day yesterday! I hear Turkey Bowl practice was excellent (no injuries!) and I am pleased to see some trash talk starting up from the VA.  I learned a lot at the Program Director’s meeting on Thursday and Friday and look forward to bringing some new ideas to our program as well.  This week, we have the final push to GET YOUR FLU SHOT if you haven’t already, continued Doctoberfest trivia and fun, and the anticipated completion of the BLOCK 7 clinic and call schedule. Nice! Thanks Jen, Lynsey and chiefs!

This weeks kudos go to Liz Gilbert from me for handling an amazingly busy ID consult weekend with skill and grace, to Lakshmi Krishnan for an outstanding chair’s conference, to John Yeatts and Dinushika Mohottige for fantastic SAR talks, to the current Gen Med SARS Matt Atkins, Kristen Glisinski, Jessie Seidelman, Ryan Jessee and Eric Yoder for general awesomeness and fantastic attitudes, to CoCo Fraiche from Dr. Pooh Setji for outstanding night float notes, to our many folks who were pulled this past week – Hari Ramalingam, Kevin Smith, Maggie  Moses, Jacob Kaufmann, Maggie Infeld, Lakshmi Krishnan, Julia Cupp, Liz Gilbert, Vedran Oruc and Myles Nickolich — A HUGE THANK YOU !!

Welcome to the Duke Family to Jack Lindner, adorable son of Sam and Lauren Lindner!

Be on the lookout for more fun Doctoberfest treats this week, as well as the resumption of the trivia question.

Our pubmed from the program this week goes to Jessie Seidelman and Kelly Ground for their presentations at ID Week.  See below for a picture of Jessie with a million people surrounding her poster! Great work to both of you.

Have a great week!

QI CORNER

Congrats to the 83% of you who have gotten your flu shots! Great job getting yourself vaccinated--and quickly! But, that means almost 1 in 5 of you still have not gotten around to it. You know who you are... and so do we. You will be receiving personal emails from here forward until you get it done. Let's get our program compliance to 100% by next week!

The Making Wise Choices Easier competition is heating up, with a number of great proposals in the works. Remember, the deadline for submission is in one week (Oct 19) -- details on format are in the flier linked at the bottom of Weekly Updates.

Join us this Wednesday at 12:00 NOON (15 minutes earlier than usual, I know) in the Med Res Library for a great M&M noon conference. The case is a great one, and it's going to invite lots of interesting discussion. Bring your lunch, because it's a We Care Wednesday!

I will also be hosting another pizza dinner this Wednesday at 6:30pm in the Med Res Library to encourage you to sit down and decompress in a casual setting. We want you to have lots of chances to step back, relax, and talk to each other in the wake of our program's tragic loss in September. I hope many of you can make it to take a moment to relax and warm up with some hot pizza on your way in/out of work.

CLINIC CORNER

We survived the rain here at Pickett.

We have new faces starting at Pickett.

Dr. Claire Kappa (recent Duke Graduate) has now joined our attending pool. She will start precepting resident clinic in January.

Next we have a new HCA from Iowa Alison Amendola, MHA, MBA.  Alison joins our team with solid administrative leadership experience in ambulatory care, most recently with the University of Iowa. She enjoys business operations and brings a strong finance perspective to this leadership role.

We have another Jasmine, Jasmine Pugh, CMA, has accepted our offer and has a tentative start date of October 19th

We had a good representation at the Stead tread, past graduate Ben Lloyd, Dr. Jeff Clough and Dr. Rubin attending and our two interns Jeremy Cypen and Josh Lee.

We had a good turn out for the American Heart Association Triangle Heart Walk before it rained.

Marie has a good candy sample from Gurgley's pharmacy of a medications for 1 week packed for a patient. Come see Marie for this wonderful patient tool to help with managing medications.

The residents have noticed a change with Transforming Primary Care Program. Patients are being called, medications reconciled the day before, labs/radiology/vaccines are being ordered and visit diagnosis entered before the office visit.

We are looking forward to Halloween at the end of the month.

Sincerely

Sharon Rubin, MD, FACP

Assistant Professor, Duke University Medical Center

DOCTOBERFEST IS HERE!

“Taking Care of Our Community and Each Other”

October 1-31, 2015

Join the Internal Medicine Residency Program in our 4th annual Doctoberfest celebration! This year our continued focus will be on building and strengthening our community – with an added focus on taking care of each other and ourselves.

“We Care Wednesdays.” Each Wednesday for the month of October we will not provide lunch for Noon Conference, but rather donate the amount usually spent to a charity selected by the house staff.  Your Residency Council will be in touch to discuss options for donations.

Join us this Wednesday afternoon for a special pizza dinner from Enzo's with Dr. Lindsay Boole!

Get Your Flu Shot!!

We kicked off our annual flu vaccination campaign with a 24-hour Duke Medicine Mass Flu Vaccination drill on Thursday, September 17, 2015. Mass vaccination clinics will be available at each of the hospitals and clinics throughout DUHS. Following the drill, we will continue our annual flu vaccination program, during which time we will provide many additional opportunities for you to get vaccinated. A schedule of vaccination clinics will be posted on the employee intranet in early September.  This list will be updated throughout the vaccination season. Vaccination is also available at Employee Occupational Health and Wellness (EOHW) during business hours.

If you have questions about the flu vaccine or its availability, please visit the DUHS Influenza Resource Guide or duke.edu/flu, ask your manager or contact EOHW.

Together, we can stop the flu. Thank you for your commitment to keeping our patients, and our community, safe and healthy.

Key points for trainees:

Get this done ASAP.
If you have medical exemption, be sure it shows up on your personal OESO Page—contact EOHW for any questions.
If the flu vaccine is received at any site (including the VA) besides DUH, DRH, or DUKE RALEIGH, you should take a picture of your documentation form (legible name, date, location and lot #) and email it to eohwflu@dm.duke.edu.

Please direct any questions to kathryn.andolsek@duke.edu
