Med Ed Opportunity
The Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) is one of the groups within the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). They are putting together a task force to look at Clinical Skills and Assessment (the CLASS Project). This has become very important since the USMLE Step 2CS exam has ended. They are actively recruiting medical students, residents, and fellows to join the project. This is a great way to get involved with medical education at the national level and student input is critically important. There is more information in the attached flyer including a link to self nominate.

Academic Hospital Medicine Fellowship Opportunity
Northwestern University’s Division of Hospital Medicine is now accepting applications for their Academic Hospital Medicine Fellowship. This two-year fellowship is designed to provide advanced training to junior hospitalists to launch them into successful academic careers. The program includes formal training, mentorship, and a capstone project. Each fellow receives protected time, ranging from 25-75%, as they focus their training in 1 of 3 areas: Quality Improvement, Medical Education, or Health Services and Outcomes Research. Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education

Duke University is cohosting the third annual public summit of the National Academies’ Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education. President Vincent Price will give the opening remarks, and Provost Sally Kornbluth will close the event with final remarks. Registration is free to attend the online event.

LGBTQ+ GI/Hep Panel
With interview season in full swing, and in the spirit of commitment to diversity, we are hosting a webinar. We plan to discuss topics pertinent to the application process (for fellowship and for post-fellowship employment) specific to LGBTQ individuals and welcome all levels of trainees to this discussion. Please see below for more details and consider sharing the information to your trainees.

Pipeline Teaching and Mentoring Opportunity at City of Medicine High School
We are excited to announce a new longitudinal  pipeline building rotation in the Medicine Residency! Your role is to work with your colleagues as teachers and mentors to students at the City of Medicine Academy High School located next to Duke Regional Hospital.

This was planned in collaboration with the COM High School Staff and our Department of Medicine Diversity Equity Inclusion and Anti-Racism Education Sub-Committee, including resident reps Ceshae Harding and Harsh Patolia. While the final details and schedule of the opportunity are still being worked out, we want to begin the application process so that when they are ready, we are ready!  In general, those selected would work at the COM Academy during half or full days during their +2 weeks or elective rotations.

Our first opportunity is to teach in the sophomore health science class. We envision pairs or triads of residents teaching for half days on their +2 blocks – this will take some coordination but we believe it is critical to have people regularly attending these sessions and handing off to the next “+2” group. This opportunity is available to all years (intern, JAR, SAR) For MedPeds residents, this could occur during the MedPeds ambulatory rotation (your PD will help with coordination). Notably, this opportunity to work with members of our community occurs DURING the work day, not after work.  Other less time intensive opportunities are anticipated in the future.

This health careers focused magnet school serves a predominately Black and Latinx student community, all of whom are planning careers in the health sciences. To apply to become a COM Academy Partner, please fill out the Qualtrics by SEPTEMBER 20th.  Selection process will be by our committee – exact numbers pend interest and scheduling.  

2021 Stead Tread 5K Fun Run/Walk
You are invited to sign up to participate in the annual Stead Tread 5K fun run/walk on Saturday October 16th at 9:00 AM on the American Tobacco Trail in Durham.

We will start and finish the race at Solite Park and will have an award ceremony and hang out afterward. 100% of the proceeds from this race benefit Lincoln Clinic, which provides health care to the medically underserved population of Durham. Lincoln has been a huge asset to Durham for decades, but especially over this past year. So, I hope we can pitch in to raise money to help them out and show how much they are appreciated.  If you want to help but can’t participate in the race for whatever reason, you can help in other ways, just ask how you can get involved!

Registration is $30 (if you sign up before October 1st) which includes a fashionable T-shirt as well as race day snacks. Please invite your friends, significant other, and anyone else who might join. There will be prizes for:

• Five fastest runners

• Fastest Lincoln clinic patient

• Fastest housestaff

• Fastest faculty

• Fastest runners under 12 years old

• Most creative outfit

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
