Internal Medicine Residency News, Sept. 14, 2020

From the Director

It’s flu shot season! Fortunately it is not quite yet flu season. With COVID precautions in place, we do not have the usual flu shot stations outside conference rooms and the cafeteria. But, it is still remarkably easy (And free! And required, unless you have an approved exemption). Please see any of the charge nurses on the inpatient floors as your easiest way. You can also get a flu shot outside of Duke if you choose, but you will need to upload the records so that your shot is recorded in the database.

Interviews in the interview rooms seem to be going well – please let me or the chiefs know if you have any questions or problems with the setup.

Kudos
Kudos this week go to JR Peacock for his excellent Cohen Conference and Alex Reddy for an awesome SAR talk. Also to Hubie Haywood, Katherine Zhou, Matt Coco (EM) and Gabriela Kraiter for great work in the CICU from CICU teach SAR Alex Grubb, to Audrey Zhang from Jan Dillard at the DOC for compassionate patient centered care, to Kurren Mehta for early a.m. help and Matt Abbott for great leadership at the VA (both from Kirsten Binz), to Tingrui Zhao from Brittany Chapman for fantastic care of a NF patient, to Tareq Aljurf from Aubrie Carroll for amazing work on 9300 teach, to Priyanka Patel for amazing triage and patient care and Matt Goodwin for fantastic sign out (both from Sarah Greene), to Seabass Franco from the MICU team (he got flowers from an appreciative patient’s family), and to Steve Davies and Cara Hoke for being great DHP teammates (from Bari Rosenberg, reigning taco champ).

PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Payton Kendsersky for her article in Current Cardiology Reports. Kendsersky P and Krasuski R. Intensive Care Unit Management of the Adult with Congenital Heart Disease. Current Cardiology Reports 2020; 22; 136.

Have a great week!

Clinic Corner: Pickett Road

Contributed by Jeff Clough

Since March, Pickett Road has tested thousands of people for COVID-19 at our drive-up tent, which will be closing with the opening of the new Willard Street location. Many people, including our wonderful internal medicine residents, were instrumental in the successful operation of the tent. Karen Nielsen, Pickett’s Population Health Nurse, was recognized for her outstanding commitment.

Nominate a Shero for Women in Medicine Month
During the month of September, the Department of Medicine will honor women physicians as part of the annual Women in Medicine Month, a national campaign to highlight the accomplishments of women physicians, scientists, educators, and leaders in medicine. The DOM Program for Women in Internal Medicine (PWIM) will coordinate our celebration of Women in Medicine Month, and we ask you to participate by nominating a colleague who you consider to be a DOM shero – tell us how she inspires you and why she is your hero. Sheroes will be highlighted throughout the month of September on the department’s website and Twitter account. Read about DOM Sheroes and nominate a Shero.
