From the Director

This week we have a group of visiting educators from Stanford University’s Internal Medicine Residency Program – we look forward to learning from them and to showing them many of the great things that are happening in our own program.  They will be joining us for various conferences and reports, as well as on rounds and at the DOC and Pickett clinics – please be sure to give them all a warm welcome to Duke!

This week we also have our first “Division Night!” at Thirsty Thursday – thank you to Hospital Medicine for sponsoring Thirsty Thursday at Northern Spy.  Hope to see a big crowd decompressing after work with the fantastic attendings from Hospital Medicine!

Are you interested in being a better writer? Do you want to work on narrative medicine? Please join Dr. Frank Neelon and colleagues for a wonderful new opportunity, La Pluma: A Narrative Essay Writing Group. Our first meeting for informational purposes, is scheduled for Wed, Sept. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in Seeley Mudd 212C. This group will be comprised of learners of all levels (students, trainees and faculty), and sounds like a fantastic opportunity to work with a committed group to enhance your narrative medicine skills.

Kudos
Kudos this week go to Jess Regan for her SAR talk, as well as Michael Burt from Charis Davis, RN (8300) for excellent communication with the nurses overnight while on NF, and from Lara Hayes to Dennis Narcisse for jumping in TWICE to help a busy colleague place a line even though he was trying to get out for an interview dinner (and notably barely beating out Matt Carlisle who was also rushing in to help out). To Dennis also going above and beyond and making coffee for the call teams when he went in for sign out, bringing Taylor a Cook Out milk shake for MICU call, and offering to take extra days of sign out. Kudos to Nick Ashur for doing an amazing job with his promotion to VA CCU, to Ahmad Mourad for jumping in to make coffee for his co-residents to have in report while the ACR was interviewing, to Sean Chen and Sunny Chung for bringing up an important VA safety issue about the needle stick protocol that is leading to policy changes, to All the SARs who have been doing excellent teamwork to make sure patient's get excellent care and everyone can get to interviews, and to Caroline and Jared for being awesome and offering to take extra sign out days even though they were so busy!

Clinic Corner: PRIME

PRIME staffing updates: LPN Scott Thomas is now fully on board and working with Michelle Dunlap and Cece Hamlett on the LPN team. New RN Lia Bertolaccini is assisting in PRIME sometimes (also is assigned to Women’s Health Clinic). Please welcome them both.

Construction update: Don’t forget everybody needs to be out of exam rooms by 4:30 p.m. We can move your patient to an LPN check-in room before then for you to finish your visit. You’re welcome to continue charting in the precepting room after 4:30.

Flu shots will be rolling out soon.  If a patient refuses a flu shot for the LPN on check-in, the LPN will leave the reminder in for you to complete. Please have another conversation to try to persuade them to be immunized.

“Clinical decision aid” black binders are available in the hall mailboxes – grab one before your clinic every day and return it at the end. LOTS of guideline-based goodies, including VA formulary drugs!

8th Annual Stead Tread 5K 
The 8th annual Stead Tread will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019 at 9 a.m. on the American Tobacco Trail (starting at Solite Park in Durham). Now Accepting Applications for Global Health Elective Rotations
The Hubert Yeargan Center for Global Health (HYC) is now accepting applications for Global Health Elective Rotations for July 2020 and January and March 2021. Deadline for applciations is Sept. 30.

Application is open to Duke Residents from the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics: Internal Medicine (PGY 2); Med-Peds (PGY 3); Med-Psych (PGY 4); Pediatrics (PGY 2), Family Medicine (PGY 2).

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
