Internal Medicine Residency News, Sept. 18, 2017

From the Director

Hi Everyone!

Happy fall! Turkey bowl practices are continuing to go well, many thanks to Tara Holder and Sipa Yankey for continuing to encourage the weekend warriors!  This week we also have a visiting professor from Vanderbilt for Grand Rounds, invited by 2016-17 DVAMC Chief Adam Banks! Looking forward to seeing you there.

ERAS opened for medical students on Sept. 15th! Interns, hard to believe it was just a year ago that you were clicking “submit” on that application! Get ready for the signups for interview tours, interview dinners, “My Take” and more! We are looking forward to the recruitment kickoff/fall-fest at our home on Oct. 13th!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Tanya Aylward for a fantastic SAR talk, and to Casey Sullivan for an equally awesome Chair’s conference.  More kudos to Mike Grant from Matt Tucker for coming in on a day off to check on a patient who had gone to surgery, to Claudia Leung from Suchita Sata for great post-discharge care of her patients, and to Tamara Saint-Surin from Bill Hargett for great work on Gen Med.

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Tsion Aberra for her recent article in JAMA Cardiology. JAMA Cardiol. 2017 May 31. doi: 10.1001/jamacardio.2017.1213. Clinic Corner: PRIME

Contributed by Sonal Patel

Hi everyone,

Thank you to everyone for helping with coverage for interviews.  A busy interview season is underway so we appreciate everyone’s flexibilities with coverage and schedules.

We wanted to let you know there are some changes in PRIME clinic staffing.

Medenna Carr has been switched to 1F clinic and her team’s VEC will be Sheldon Eberhardt.  Anthony McCrea has also moved to 1F and his team’s VEC will now be Paul Granchukoff. Gina Melvin is another VEC joining the PRIME staff.  We welcome our new VECs as we say farewell and thanks to those departing.

  • PACT team 1- Sheldon Eberhardt
  • PACT team 2- Paul Granchukoff
  • PACT team 3- Latasha Alston (no change)

As a reminder to residents, please use your color coded grid which shows your frames of clinic availability and use that to enter a date for your RTC order.  Please be sure your visit note reflects the same timeframe that your RTC order states as discrepancies are confusing to the staff.

Remember to send out results letters to patients within 14 days for normal results; if results are abnormal and require action, please send a letter sooner and ask the nurse to review the letter by phone with the patient.

We have been working with the Duke GME office about getting people approved in the NC Controlled Substances Database.  Hopefully this will happen soon; it’s in the state’s hands at this point by our understanding.

Hopefully you each have gotten your remote access to work; if not, please try to get it rolling and contact the National Service Desk 855-673-4357 option 3 if you have problems. If that still fails, contact Karen Higgins for further trouble-shooting.

Thanks,

Sonal and Leigh
