Get ready folks…next week’s MED RES NEWS (maybe the longest running Med Res News in the country??) is changing it up! It will be CHIEF TAKEOVER! You best shower the chiefs with dozens of kudos for your colleagues (and tag each of them with a THANKSRx as well to keep the good vibes going) so that they are typing away with all the #Dukefam love.
When I return from vacation, it will be DOCTOBERFEST, as well as ERAS intern application review kickoff (current interns, say what?), the close of Women in Medicine Month and the switch for the Med-Peds folks. In addition, better be logging those training miles for the upcoming Stead Tread (COVID compliant outdoor run or run on your own if you prefer). SARs appear to be crushing interviews like Andrea Linares Lopes crushed the meme Monday pinata in the Med Res with a leftover “ward off evil spirits” crutch from my office. Way to go, everyone.
Congratulations this weekend to our #DukeFam alums Drs. Corey Bradley and Michael Murn on their wedding! It is a true PD joy to see residents meeting up for residency weddings AND they met right here in Duke IM. Also congratulations to Gregg Robbins-Welty who placed third in the national banjo contest this past weekend!

Clinic Corner: VA/Prime

Welcome to Dr. Adedayo Fashoyin who will be covering for Dr. Koethe’s upcoming maternity leave. He’s now in clinic on Thursday afternoons to get a sense of how PRIME works. He is a fulltime attending in the 1D primary care clinic.
PRIME staff have played some musical chairs lately as we have worked to free up more space for face-to-face visits. If you need a computer other than your exam room’s, you can try the workroom (which now houses all the RNs), the former “nurse workroom” (where Charlie was and where Leigh now is), or the precepting room – there should be enough workspaces for you to find a landing spot.
As of today, we are responsible for notifying patients of their COVID testing results. Please stay in close communication with your RN if you get a result. We are working on an optimum workflow. COVID testing probably will be decentralized very soon so we will be testing on site (hopefully outside). More to come on that.
Flu shots are available now in clinic. Veterans can also get at main VA facility or at a local pharmacy in the VA network (ask your RN if you need help with that).

Academic Hospital Medicine Fellowship Opportunity
Northwestern University’s Division of Hospital Medicine is now accepting applications for their Academic Hospital Medicine Fellowship. This two-year fellowship is designed to provide advanced training to junior hospitalists to launch them into successful academic careers. The program includes formal training, mentorship, and a capstone project. Each fellow receives protected time, ranging from 25-75%, as they focus their training in 1 of 3 areas: Quality Improvement, Medical Education, or Health Services and Outcomes Research. Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education
Duke University is cohosting the third annual public summit of the National Academies’ Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education. President Vincent Price will give the opening remarks, and Provost Sally Kornbluth will close the event with final remarks. Registration is free to attend the online event.

2021 Stead Tread 5K Fun Run/Walk
You are invited to sign up to participate in the annual Stead Tread 5K fun run/walk on Saturday October 16th at 9:00 AM on the American Tobacco Trail in Durham.
We will start and finish the race at Solite Park and will have an award ceremony and hang out afterward. 100% of the proceeds from this race benefit Lincoln Clinic, which provides health care to the medically underserved population of Durham. Lincoln has been a huge asset to Durham for decades, but especially over this past year. So, I hope we can pitch in to raise money to help them out and show how much they are appreciated. If you want to help but can’t participate in the race for whatever reason, you can help in other ways, just ask how you can get involved!
Registration is $30 (if you sign up before October 1st) which includes a fashionable T-shirt as well as race day snacks. Please invite your friends, significant other, and anyone else who might join. There will be prizes for:

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources.
