Internal Medicine Residency News, Sept. 30, 2019

From the Director

It’s almost Doctoberfest!  Be ready for trivia, some extra treats, doing good for the community, prizes and ending the month with our recruitment kickoff party! The full calendar will be posted and sent out so you can see what we have planned.

Callie Berkowitz wedding photoMany thanks to the Orgain Stead Society for hosting Trivia Night last week. I don’t know the final scores, but word on the street is that the interns crushed it. In addition to those kudos, CONGRATULATIONS to Callie Berkowitz on her wedding! Glad to see many members of the #DukeFamily celebrating together. Also congratulations from across the country to Duke IM alums Irena Tan and Kent Feng on their wedding this past weekend.

Kudos
We are excited to see that Gen Med 4 and 5 had some healthy competition this past week with a STEP CONTEST! While it started out with MS II Sandra Au challenging Dr. Jon Bae, pretty soon the all team members were in a fierce battle. Sheila Sherzoy reports that ED intern Mitchell Veverka won the contest with 168 flights. It appears from the photo that Dr. Tom Holland is pretty excited to have his team beat Dr. Bae’s team.  Other kudos this week go to Akash Goyal, Nick Kamp and Saad Atiq from Eric Wei for going above and beyond to care for very sick veterans in the VA MICU this week, with fantastic team work, family communication and overall excellence in patient centered care, to Nick Koutlas from former chief Winn Seay for outstanding work in the Duke MICU, and to Monty Natour from Tammy Hsu for his support of the night interns on 9100 during a very busy week. Also kudos to Amadea Britton for her outstanding SAR talk and to Sean Chen for a fantastic chair’s conference.!

PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to John David Ike for his recent publication in  Information Services & Use, vol. 39, no. 1-2, pp. 93-104, 2019, “Nurturing context: TRACE, the arts, medical practice, and health literacy” Ike, John Davida; | Postlethwait, Rachaelb | Parker, Ruth.

Have a great week!

Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

Contributed by Daniella Zipkin

Ambulatory Town Hall
You will see a Continuity Clinic Survey coming to you in the next week or two, which is specific to your continuity site. Please share all of your feedback! Clinic leadership use this information in detail and will review issues with you at the upcoming Town Halls, to be scheduled during morning report slots. Thank you!

The Schedule is the Thing
Having continuity with your patients in clinic hinges on your schedule being in place in a timely fashion so that patients can easily schedule with you. All of the clinic sites want schedules built out as far as possible. The further out  we build, however, the more we would have to restrict you schedule change needs as things come up in your lives. It’s a work in progress, and we would like your feedback. What is the sweet spot? 90 days? A bit more? A bit less? Please share your thoughts on this with Caroline Sloan, Dani Zipkin, or your friendly neighborhood ResCo representative. We want to hear from you. Thanks!

Observed Encounters
Reminder to check in with your attendings every time you are in clinic to see if it’s a good opportunity for observed encounters! The goal is TWO for every Intern, ONE for every JAR and SAR, during the year. Please help us get these done by being proactive during clinic – asking us for observation before you see a patient. Thanks in advance for helping with this!

Coming soon!
Anne Phelps will be expanding the MKSAP based boards teaching for SARs this year – SARs can look for her sessions embedded in ambulatory weeks starting in October!

Narrative Medicine
The Narrative Medicine group will hold its first session of the year Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. in the Med Res Library. Dr. Galanos will precept this session. The theme for this session will be "Transitions." If you are interested in writing a piece, feel free to write about anything this word might bring to your mind. Please limit your piece to less than 1,000 words and email Govind Krishnan your piece by next Monday, Oct. 7. The narrative medicine sessions are considered a safe space: whatever is shared in our session, we ask that you keep private as well without express permission to share it with others. As always, food will be provided! Email Govind Krishnan to RVSP; the size of the group will be limited to 10.

Carrying Grief
This session is a confidential space to discuss personal grief and how it intersects with our professional lives as physicians. It is not uncommon for house officers to experience significant losses and deaths in their personal lives, outside of work. What are the strategies individuals have developed for living with that grief and for being able to carry it while working as a medical trainee?

Carrying Grief is an opportunity to:

  • Realize there are others in our community struggling with personal loss
  • Hear from peers about their experiences and reflections
  • Support your community by holding space for each other in difficult times

The first session will be held Tuesday Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. in DMP 2W96. Food and drinks will be provided. Contact Jared Lowe with questions.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
