Internal Medicine Residency News, September 12, 2016

From the Director

End of summer was fun with Snowcones in the Courtyard on Friday! Thanks Alyson McGhan for the idea and to Tia and Madi for organizing. It was nice to spend some time with everyone enjoying lunch catching up. Also thanks to Madi and the chiefs for organizing the Intern/Chief night out on Thursday.

We are gearing up for our annual Doctoberfest, a month of trivia, community service and recognizing the good work that you all do on a daily basis. Keep an eye out for announcements of the various activities. Believe it or not, ERAS for medical students opens up this week, and we will have our recruitment kickoff as part of the Doctoberfest festivities. Please mark your calendars for the 5th Annual Stead Tread 5K Fun Run (fantastic leadership by Matt Crowley and the Kempner Society) on October 8th. You don’t have to be as fast as Adam Banks to participate, and we hope to see you there!

Kudos this week go to Jared Lowe and Megan Gillum (as well as to Alyson McGhan and Jen Rymer) from Leah Machen for being an awesome CCU team; to Mike Grant, Chris Pumill and Titus Ng’eno from Poonam Sharma for their fantastic patient-centered care on Duke Gen Med (plus their fashion sense, see below); to Eric Black-Maier for a simply fantastic SAR talk on syncope; and to two of our medical students who got praise from patients this week – Mike Hochman and visiting student Juliette Logan. Great work everyone!

And a big 'thank you' to everyone who worked thru the Maestro Care downtime and changeover this weekend!

Bill Hargett and I will be doing a noon conference covering the May 2016 Engagement Survey as well as updates on the year-to-date rotation evaluations and residency committees. Mark your calendar for 9/26, and we hope to see you there.

This week’s PubMed from the Program goes to Joy Bhosai for her article that has been accepted to the American Journal of Ophthalmology: "Association of dry eye tests with extra-ocular signs among 3,514 participants in the Sjögren's Syndrome International Registry."

Have a great week!

Aimee

We are getting ready for the EPIC upgade 9/11/16. We will all be learning about new EPIC flow on Monday! Pediatrics is leaving in September and so is our lab. We will have a new lab process with our CMAs as our Lab techs and phlebotomy. This will be a new process and interesting transition in October. We will be examining our own wet preps, KOH and urine microscopy in the lab.

In other news we are sending a team to the Triangle heart walk Sunday October 2, 2016 a 2pm. We welcome any walkers to join us. Also we are sending a team to the Stead Tread Saturday October 8, 2016 at 10 am to run at the Tobacco Trail.

From the Residency Office

Duke Palliative Pain prescribing cards

Kavisha Singh reported that Palliative Care was nice enough to share the electronic version of the Duke Palliative Pain prescribing cards, which are super helpful.  We've uploaded the PDF to AgileMD. Kavisha also received a stack of insulin prescribing badge cards from Endocrinology, and has placed these cards in the Med Res Office—stop by and grab one today.

Have You Logged Your Duty Hours??

With the start of the 2016-17 academic year, the residency program is asking all house staff to log their duty hours on a daily basis.  This will allow us even closer oversight of duty hour compliance across the program.  In order to use the MedHub mobile Duty Hour app, you will need to know your actual MedHub log in as it will not accept your NetID/password log in.  If you have forgotten you main log in, please go to the main MedHub site, and select "Forgot my password."  You will then be able to re-set it via email.  Lynsey Michnowicz will be sending reminders each Wednesday to those who have not yet logged their duty hours for the week.  Thank you in advance for your attention to this task!

Opportunities for Wellness

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone?

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
