From the Director

Big week this week with the playing of the prostate bowl (sorry to miss!) and the upcoming Fac vs Res BBall game on Wednesday as well as the Resident Research Grand Rounds on Friday and the ACLT trip to DC should make for a busy med res week.  Stay tuned for an opportunity to raise a little bit of $$ for one of our favorite organizations Senior PharmAssist.  For those of you around long enough (pre-COVID) to remember our amazing CharityAuction, we used to support this fantastic organization.  While we hope to have auctions again in the coming years, we want to use the Basketball game to prompt a little bit of giving!  Details to follow

I think everyone is aware that COVID #s are up.  We appreciate all of you continuing to take symptoms seriously and getting tested when you are feeling unwell.  We know it’s not easy, so thank you.

Kudos

Kudos this week to Allison Taylor from at patient that Nancy Yang saw at the DOC who couldn’t stop complimenting what a fantastic doctor Allison is, to SeaBass Franco from Dr. Sheila Sherzoy for amazing work on a busy night float night, to Courtney Dominguez, Cat Cheney, Jackie Kercheval and Hannah Schwennesen for really wonderful work in a very busy CICU from Dr. Rob Harrison, to Sam Dizon for an outstanding SAR talk, to Harsh Patolia from JT Tanaka for using POCUS to advance the care of his patients, to JT Tanaka and Drake Edwards for a great JARintern crossover report at the VA and to Emmanuella Egbonim from Carter Devlin for writing some excellent transfer notes and helping the teams. Colin Marts received a gold star for your exceptional patient care.

Pubmed from the Program

This weeks pubmed from the program goes to Kurren Mehta for his recent publication:

Mehta KA, Jowell PS, Spaete JP. Plastic Biliary Stent Fracture: A Rare Complication of Percutaneous Biliary Drain Placement. Am J Interv Radiol 2022;6:5.

Have a great week!

PRIME now has VA-sponsored home COVID antigen test kits to give patients who request them (1 package of 2 tests).

We have PCV20 for pneumococcal vaccinations.

All residents: if you would like your pronouns to display in Teams/ VA email, click here to request when you’re on VA network (it’s quick!): Personal Pronouns - VA ServicePortal v2

Staff updates: Keimarsha Fitzgerald (“Kei”) is the MSA now assigned to Team 2 (Teams J-R) – please tag her instead of Michelle Dunston. LaTasha Alston is still on maternity leave; please tag Porsche Lewis for now instead of LaTasha. New PRIME Social Worker is Stepfanie Smith (no longer Sophia Parrow).

We appreciate our PRIME nurses – Nurses Week has wrapped up but please lavish your thanks upon them – we couldn’t do it without them!!!!!

Seniors start trickling out of PRIME starting this week – hard to believe! It’s been quite a journey, from those rosy pre-pandemic days to darker times and now to a greener springtime. Thank you to all residents and especially to our seniors – you will be missed!!

PRIME nurses during Nurses Week showing their “I CARE” core values in action!

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
