Lindner selected 2017-18 VA chief resident for quality improvement and patient safety

Samuel Lindner, MD, senior assistant resident, has been selected to serve as the Durham VA Medical Center chief resident for quality improvement and patient safety for 2017-18.

Dr. Lindner will be part of a network of such chief residents across the country who lead quality improvement (QI) projects and receive expert training from mentors. He will also participate in a national curriculum designed to prepare a new generation of QI leaders able to help residents implement QI initiatives.

Lindner will work closely with Joel Boggan, MD, assistant professor of medicine (General Internal Medicine) and CRQS mentor, and previous QI chiefs, including Ryan Schulteis, Lindsay Boole, and the current chief, Matthew Atkins.

"Sam will be a natural fit for this chief residency role, as his previous career in reliability engineering equipped him with many of the tools we use in healthcare quality improvement and safety," said Dr. Boggan. "This background, his quantitative skills, and his previous work with the residency safety and quality council positions him to continue to teach and lead in these areas."

Lindner earned his undergraduate degree from Kansas State University. He graduated medical school from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. He came to Duke for internship and internal medicine residency, and earned an Appleseed Teaching Award and a Duke Resident Research Award. He has been a member of the Duke Internal Medicine Patient Safety and Quality Committee since 2014.

Lindner will begin as chief resident for quality improvement and patient safety in July 2017. After his year as chief resident, Lindner will begin a fellowship in cardiology.
