Lunyera's guest commentary in Kidney International

Joeph Lunyera, MBChB, a post-doc fellow in the division, contributed a guest commentary in the most recent issue of Kidney Internationalalong with colleague, Dr. Stephen Smith (Duke Nephrology). Their article, "Heavy metal nephropathy: considerations for exposure analysis", described a study that leveraged data from the Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan to examine heavy metal exposures and risk for chronic kidney disease. The study showed, for the first time, that exposure to multiple heavy metals increases risk for CKD, even when the level of exposure is below that at which these heavy metals were previously known to associate with adverse kidney outcomes.

"This study presented novel and interesting new data to the nephrology community," explains Lunyera.

The opportunity to write this commentary came about after Lunyera was invited to review a paper submitted to Kidney International by a team from Taiwan. Read the full article here
