The weight loss research of Dr. Nia Mitchell, Assistant Professor of Medicine (GIM), was recently cited by a news outlet, MSN.com, their section on "Lifestyle", the topic "30 Best Ways to Lose Weight After 30".
Mitchell is the lead investigator on a national weight loss program called Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), one that has found much success. Half of nearly 75,000 volunteers shed a "clinically significant" number of pounds (losing at least 5 percent of body weight). You can read more about this study in the paper, "Up to 7 Years of Sustained Weight Loss for Weight-Loss Program Completers", published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine.
"It is gratifying when a popular media outlet mentions your work, because the general public gets to hear about it," says Mitchell.
"Even better, my parents get to see that I do something other than 'play on the computer' on my non-clinic days. Ultimately, I hope this will lead to more people joining the TOPS program and getting help to manage their weight."
