New GIM Faculty Spotlight: Dana Clifton, MD

In June, Dana Clifton, MD completed her combined Duke Medicine and Pediatrics residency and now launches her career in Hospital Medicine within Duke University Hospital.

“I stayed at Duke because of the incredible faculty in the hospital medicine group,” says Clifton. “They are an impressive group of people.”

Clifton is interested to be an academic hospitalist, a clinician educator. One of the main drivers behind choosing a combined medicine/pediatrics residency was enthusiasm for global health. “I hope to be able to continue to pursue clinical work and research abroad after settling in as faculty,” she says.

RESEARCH

Dr. Clifton is currently completing two research/quality improvement projects, both underway as a resident. One tackles an evaluation of HIV screening among patients admitted with pneumonia and another examines the use of a physician led tablet-based educational tool for teaching patients and their caregivers in a pediatric diabetes clinic. She hopes to continue research and quality improvement work. Clifton admits a passion for teaching and getting involved in student/trainee education. Altogether Dr. Clifton tells us the challenges and rewards of research/QI work and teaching are compelling reasons to stay in the academic medical center.
