We spied tweets from this event and asked Dr. Sata to fill us in!
This past week, February 13, 2019, over 50 local hospitalists, both physicians and advanced practitioners, members of the NC Triangle chapter of the Society of Hospital Medicine (#TriangleSHM), met for a business meeting at the Embassy Suites in Brier Creek. Our photo to the right shows the outgoing Chapter president, Dr. Mike Craig (UNC), outgoing secretary, Dr. Nadia Pasha (Duke), guest speaker, Dr. Lenny Feldman (Hopkins), and incoming president, Dr. Suchita Sata (Duke).
Guest speaker about waste and high-value care
The feature presentation was a guest from Johns Hopkins, Dr. Lenny Feldman, MD, SFHM. Dr. Feldman is a clinician-educator who has roots in North Carolina where he completed his medicine-pediatric training at UNC, followed by a year as chief resident in internal medicine. Today, besides his role as a hospitalist in internal medicine, he is the deputy editor of the popular series “Choosing Wisely: Things We Do For No Reason” in the Journal of Hospital Medicine.
About "Choosing Wisely"
Our team loved seeing Dr. Feldman give a shout-out for our own Dr. Dan Kaplan, the speaker’s first attending as an intern in 1999!
"Dr. Kaplan continues to be a great educator of high value practice for our Duke Internal Medicine Residency."
According to Dr. Sata, DUH hospitalist
Dr. Feldman went on to give attendees exceptionally wise advice. Here were a few points: avoid checking prealbumin as a marker of malnutrition, avoid PPIs for stress ulcer prophylaxis in general medical patients, avoid repleting electrolytes to arbitrary goals, and not routinely changing PIVs that are functioning well. He also inspired many physicians to continue these high value conversations at their local institutions. Duke is a member of the High Value Practice Academic Alliance, of which Dr Sata is a Duke representative. She tells us there are multiple conversations ongoing throughout the health system to reduce waste.
Duke's presence in the Triangle SHM
The NC Triangle Chapter has great Duke leadership. The current outgoing chapter secretary is Duke Raleigh hospitalist, Dr. Nadia Pasha. The President-elect is Dr. Suchita Shah Sata, a hospitalist for Duke University Hospital. She becomes the chapter President in March 2019.
These educational meetings are certified for CME by Duke and are valuable for networking, chapter business and education. For more information on the chapter, e-mail Dr Sata or check out the chapter website.
