Request for proposals for new kidney research core center at Duke

By ajz6@dhe.duke.edu
Joanna B. Downer, PhD, director of research development in the SOM Office of the Dean, sends this request for proposals: On behalf of Thomas Coffman, MD, professor of medicine (Nephrology) I am soliciting proposals for Pilot & Feasibility (P&F) Projects to be included in an application to establish a George M. O’Brien Kidney Research Core Center at Duke. The proposed O’Brien Center will promote and support research into understanding the unique links between the kidney, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension by establishing Cores to support animal models and phenotyping for hypertension, kidney and cardiovascular disease; human genetics studies; and clinical and translational research. P&F projects should take advantage of one or more of these Cores. The P&F program will provide support of $50,000/yr for up to 2 years for selected individuals with regular faculty appointments for work related to the Center’s theme; post-doctoral fellows are not eligible. P&F support is designed to enable development of sufficient preliminary data to support application for external funding. Three categories of faculty are eligible for funding:
  1. New investigators working in the Center’s theme but who do not have independent (R01 or P01 level) funding from NIH;
  2. Established investigators not currently working in the Center’s theme but whose P&F project would apply their expertise to a relevant question; or
  3. Established investigators working in the Center’s theme, but whose proposed P&F project represents a new line of investigation.
If eligible and interested, please submit a title, abstract (~500 words) and a tailored NIH bio-sketch (both in Word format) to joanna.downer@duke.edu by end of business on October 28. Please indicate in your email which one of the three eligibility categories you consider most relevant to you. Selected proposals will be included in the grant application. Contact Dr. Coffman, PI of the proposed O’Brien Center, at tcoffman@duke.edu if you have any questions about the Cores’ services or the P&F program.
