The Duke Division of Gastroenterology is proud to present the inaugural Joanne A. P. Wilson Lecture. The newly established annual lecture honors Joanne A. P. Wilson, MD, professor of medicine (Gastroenterology).
The inaugural lecture will be given by Juanita Merchant, MD, PhD, professor of medicine and chief of Division of Gastroenterology at the University Of Arizona College Of Medicine on Wed., Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. Dr. Merchant will present "Modeling Complications of Helicobacter Gastritis: A Tale Cytokines."
Dr. Wilson was valedictorian at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, N.C. She then went on to graduate with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill, where she received the prestigious Venable Medal in Chemistry. She attended Duke School of Medicine from 1969-1973, where she was one of two African Americans in her class and the only African American woman. She was elected the first African American Student Body President for Duke School of Medicine and graduated with honors. She did her internship and residency at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Wilson was recruited back to Duke in 1986 as the first African American woman in the School of Medicine with tenure and in 1994 became only the second female full Professor in the Department of Medicine.
In 1998, Wilson became the first woman and African American elected as Secretary of the AGA. In this role and subsequent leadership roles nationally in gastroenterology, she was at the forefront of increasing public awareness of the importance of colorectal cancer screening. For her contributions, she received the Outstanding Woman in Science Award from the AGA in 2008.
Please join Duke GI Division Grand Rounds during Black History Month, in February 2021, for the inaugural lecture given by Juanita Merchant, MD, PhD, professor of Medicine, and Chief of Division of Gastroenterology at the University Of Arizona College Of Medicine on Wednesday, February 3 at 5:00 pm.
This special inaugural lecture will be followed by GI Grand Rounds presentations by Keisha Bentley-Edwards, PhD on Feb. 10, and William A. Darity, Jr, PhD on Feb. 17. These lectures will highlight social determinants of health and health disparities.
