Southern SGIM 2021 Recap

February 24th and 25th gave SGIM members a first: a fully virtual Southern Region Conference. Over the course of a day and a half, we got to hear an array of presentations and speeches from our colleagues. Participants joined from as far away as Texas and Kentucky, a chance for new connections with our near and far neighbors.

Duke participated in the much anticipated Medical Jeopardy.  Residents Rachel Tobin, Aaron Hein and James Helzberg represented us.

We had a blast representing Duke Internal Medicine during the SGIM Jeopardy competition," says Rachel Tobin. "Although we didn’t take home the trophy, it was great to meet some of our colleagues from other residency programs in our region virtually. Go Duke!”

Our own Nia Mitchell helped chair the scientific abstract research committee and provided moderator services throughout the virtual presentations. I presented the research abstract from our team of Alissa Stavig, John Oliver, Lynn Bowlby, Katherine Henderson, Jan Dillard and Elissa Nickolopoulos entitled “Patients', Staff, and Providers' Factual Knowledge About Hospital Chaplains and Association with Desire for Chaplain Services.”

We hope more of our Duke group can attend next year.  It remains to be seen what the next regional meeting will look like.
