Special recognitions: April-Sept 2010

John Alexander (Cardiology) was appointed DCRI Co-Director, Cardiovascular Research.
Karen Alexander (Cardiology) was appointed to the AHA Older Populations Council. Andrew Armstrong (Oncology) was appointed this summer (2010) to be on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN)'s prostate cancer guidelines committee. Hayden Bosworth (General Internal Medicine) became a fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine. Also, Dr. Bosworth’s book was published; BOSWORTH HB (eds.) (2010). Improving Patient Treatment Adherence: A Clinician Guidebook, Springer. Cedric Bright (General Internal Medicine) is President-Elect 2010-2011 and President 2011-2012 of the National Medical Association.  Dr. Bright has been an integral member of the Duke Community and has continued to demonstrate his leadership roles both locally and nationally. Harvey Jay Cohen (Geriatrics) received special recognition at this year’s meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago.  The award recognizes distinguished leadership and achievement in the field of geriatric oncology.  Dr. Cohen is Director of the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development and Walter Kempner Professor of Medicine, received the 2010 B. J. Kennedy Award and Lecture for Scientific Excellence in Geriatric Oncology.  Dr. Cohen chairs the Cancer in the Elderly Committee for Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB), and co-chairs the Task Force on Cancer and Aging for the American Association for Cancer Research. He has published extensively with more than 300 articles and book chapters on topics in geriatrics and hematology/oncology, with special emphasis on aspects of cancer and immunologic disorders in the elderly, and geriatric assessment. His current interests are geriatric assessment, biologic basis for functional decline. Ralph Corey (Infectious Diseases) has been selected by a distinguished faculty committee as recipient of the 2010 Research Mentoring Award for clinically-based research.  This award was created in 2009 to honor the many outstanding research mentors in the Schools of Medicine and Nursing.  The award was formally presented at Research Career Day on May 21, 2010. Victor Dzau (Cardiology) has the following achievements for 2010: Named Lectures: President’s Lecture, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Princeton, NJ; Committees for NIH: 1) Chairman, Steering Committee, NHLBI Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium; 2) Chairman, Scientific Advisory Board, NHLBI Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium; 3) Member, Search Committee for Director of NHLBI; 4) National Cancer Advisory Board Working Group to review National Cancer Strategy and National Cancer Institute; Awards: 1) McGill Alumni Global Lifetime Achievement Award; 2)Research Achievement Award, American Heart Association; 3) Honorary Degree, Doctor of Science, King’s College London; New Appointments: 1) Board of Directors, Research!America; 2) Executive Committee, North Carolina Biotechnology Center; 3) Governor’s China Council, North Carolina; 4) Governor’s Innovation Council, North Carolina; 5) Lt. Governor’s New Schools Project, North Carolina Jane Gagliardi (Med/Psych and Director of Undergraduate Education for DoM) participated in the AAMC Early Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar held July 10-13, 2010.  Jane is also a committee member for the 2010 Association of Medicine and Psychiatry Annual CME Conference, to be held on September 24-25, 2010, Chicago, IL. Anthony Galanos (Geriatrics) has been selected by a distinguished faculty committee as the recipient of the 2010 Leonard Palumbo, Jr. MD Faculty Achievement Award.  This award honors a faculty member who displays both a dedication to compassionate patient care and excellence in the teaching and mentoring of young physicians. This award will be formally presented to Dr. Galanos by Dean Nancy Andrews at the annual Spring Faculty Meeting, which was held at the Doris Duke Center of the Duke Gardens on May 13, 2010. Brent Hanks (Hematology/Oncology) was recently elected to Duke's AOA (Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society), the only housestaff elected this year. Robert Harrington (Cardiology) was awarded distinguished professorship: the Richard Sean Stack, MD/Guidant Foundation Professor of Cardiology for the School of Medicine.  Dr. Harrington is Director of the Duke Clinical Research Institute and Professor of Medicine. Alex Kemper (Cardiology) is Assistant Editor of Pediatrics. Monica Kraft (Pulmonary) has been appointed Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine.  Dr. Kraft is a highly productive investigator in the field of asthma and airway biology and is recognized as an international leader in translational research in asthma. Gary Lyman (Oncology) received special recognition at this year’s meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago. Dr. Lyman won the ASCO 2010 Statesman Award. The Statesman Award is reserved for volunteers who have given at least 20 years of service to the Society. Over the past two decades Lyman has served as chair or member of multiple clinical practice guidelines panels and committees. He is also associate editor for ASCO’s Journal of Oncology Practice.  Dr. Lyman is professor of medicine and director of comparative effectiveness and outcomes research, Duke University School of Medicine and the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center; senior fellow, Duke Center for Clinical Health Policy Research; and editor-In-chief, Cancer Investigation. Thomas Owens (Hospitalists) was appointed as Chief Medical Office of Duke University Hospital, effective 4/2010.  Dr. Owens joined the Duke faculty in July 2000 and is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics. Priyesh Patel (Internal Medicine Intern) received the Internal Medicine Fall 2009 Appleseed Resident Teaching Award.  This award was created by Duke medical students to recognize, support, and reward excellent teaching by house staff. Eric Peterson (Cardiology) was awarded distinguished professorship: the Fred Cobb, MD, Professor of Medicine for the School of Medicine. Dr. Peterson is DCRI Faculty Associate Director, DCRI Director of CV Outcomes Research & Quality and Professor of Medicine. David Pisetsky (Rheumatology) became Chair of the Department’s Appointments, Promotion and Tenure Committee effective September 1, 2010.  A member of Duke faculty since 1978, Dr. Pisetsky has served on the APT committee since 2003.  Dr. Pisetsky also serves as the Physician Editor of “The Rheumatologist” since its launch in 2006 and is the author of the award-winning column, “Rheuminations”. Rheuminations won the American Society of Healthcare Publications (ASHPE) Award for Best Regular Column.
Sunil Rao (Cardiology) was appointed representative from the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) to the National Quality Forum.  Dr. Rao was also appointed to the Committee on Simulation for SCAI.
Sarah Rivelli (Med/Psych) is Co-Chair for the Annual Association of Medicine and Psychiatry Conference, September 24-25, 2010 in Chicago, IL. John Robert (Internal Medicine Intern) received the Internal Medicine Fall 2009 Appleseed Resident Teaching Award.  This award was created by Duke medical students to recognize, support, and reward excellent teaching by house staff. Joseph Rogers (Cardiology) received the 2010 Master Clinician Teacher Award.  This award honors individuals with superlative accomplishment and service in the areas of clinical care and teaching. Kevin Schulman (General Internal Medicine) was awarded distinguished professorship: the Gregory Mario and Jeremy Mario Professor of Business Administration for the Fuqua School of Business.  Dr. Schulman is DCRI Associate Director, DCRI Director of Center for Clinical and Genetic Economics, Director of Health Sector Management Program of the Fuqua School of Business, and Professor of Medicine. Tilak Shah (Internal Medicine Intern) received the Internal Medicine Fall 2009 Appleseed Resident Teaching Award.  This award was created by Duke medical students to recognize, support, and reward excellent teaching by house staff. Phillip (Brian) Smith (Pediatrics) was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Associate Director of DCRI Clinical Research Fellowship Program. Marvaretta Stevenson (Oncology) received special recognition at this year’s meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago. Dr. Stevenson received the ASCO 2010 Merit Award for her presentation related to molecular markers linked to the spread of lung cancer. Marilyn Telen (Hematology) received a Fulbright Scholar Award and is a Fulbright Scholar at the Russian State Medical University in Moscow for the months of September-November 2010.  While there, Dr. Telen will be lecturing on principles of evidence-based medicine and clinical research, as well as clinical questions in hematology, and working with doctors at various teaching hospitals in Moscow. Hans Tillman (Gastroenterology) was invited to deliver 2 lectures at the 12th joint annual scientific meeting of the Hong Kong Society of Gastroenterology. Yiping Yang (Oncology) was elected into The American Society for Clinical Investigators (ASCI) in April, 2010.
