Dr. and Mrs. William H. Spencer, III have made a $1 million bequest in honor of Dr. Spencer’s upcoming Duke School of Medicine reunion, announced Magnus Ohman, MD, vice chair for development and innovation.
When realized, Dr. and Mrs. Spencer’s generous gift will support the Division of Cardiology in its mission to achieve the highest level of excellence in patient care, research, and education.
Spencer graduated from Duke University in 1961 and went to medical school at Duke University and graduated with honors in 1965. He went on to do his internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, then completed his residency and fellowship programs at Duke University Medical Center. He finished the Cardiology fellowship program here in 1972 and joined a private practice, Houston Cardiovascular Associates, in Houston, TX.
Spencer was director of the Pacemaker Clinic of The Methodist Hospital 1992-2000. In 1994, he joined Baylor Cardiovascular Consultants of Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, and became director of the Baylor Heart Clinic. He is currently professor of medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina.
In 2001, Spencer was named a distinguished alumnus of Duke University Medical Center. He is active on editorial and advisory boards and committees.
His interests include cardiac pacing, interventional cardiology, and the treatment for Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM), where he was the first physician in the United States to perform the the nonsurgical septal reduction procedure (NSRT). He has developed and perfected this procedure now to an accepted standard therapy for HOCM and travels the world teaching the procedure to other physicians.
