Supporting data science in the Department of Medicine

Armando Bedoya, MD, faculty member in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, will serve as associate chair for data science, effective January 1.

This is a new role in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Bedoya will assist faculty and trainees as they seek access to health care data and support from the various teams across Duke University that are building tools and talents in artificial intelligence and data science.

"We are excited to have Armando join our research leadership team to coordinate the Department's data science activities and facilitate faculty interactions with key Duke partners," said Kathleen Cooney, MD, chair of the Department.

The Department's 2019 Research Strategic Plan outlined a strategy to innovate in cutting-edge data science and identified an opportunity to create a new leadership role for data science.

"I'm happy to help, and I'm eager to assist my colleagues in getting access to data and the tools to answer their research questions," said Bedoya.

Bedoya currently serves as medical director of the Analytics Center of Excellence in Duke Health Technology Solutions (DHTS). The knowledge of Duke resources that he is gaining in that role will benefit Medicine faculty and trainees, said Dr. Cooney.

Bedoya completed his training in internal medicine and pulmonary and critical care at Duke and served as the chief medical resident for Duke Regional Hospital and ambulatory medicine in 2015-2016.
