We had the special “Second Annual Turkey Bowl” Thanksgiving football game between the Duke and VAH residents, which was originated the previous year by Drs. Charles Scoggin and Ed Holmes. This football battle featured many participants with interesting nicknames, including Bob “Shifty Eyes” Waterbor, “Stormin” Norman Adair, Michael "High-pockets” Knowles, "Floggin” Kay Hale, and “Foul Mouth” Feussner, among other nicknames. I still have a shirt with a logo that we had made for that game. Duke won by 6-0; I have a vivid memory of Joe McClellan running down the sideline to make a great snare for the winning touchdown pass with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.
The Turkey Bowl is a favorite tradition for both housestaff and faculty alike, many of whom will participate either as referees or as spectators. All are invited to come out and cheer on the teams.
