Victor J. Dzau, MD, Chancellor for Health Affairs; CEO, Duke University Health System announced today the recipients of the 2014 Chancellor's Discovery Program Awards. Two from the Department of Medicine were selected:
  • Cynthia Moylan, MD, MS, assistant professor of medicine (Gastroenterology), was selected for the project "Rare genetic variants of progressive NAFLD."
  • Rahima Zennadi, PhD, MS, assistant professor of medicine (Hematology), was selected for the project "Copper chelating agents: A potential preventive therapeutic for sickle cell vasoocclusive crises."
This award program provides five one-year, $75,000 grants to investigators who submitted compelling proposals that would open exciting new lines of investigation for the faculty member and could ultimately earn externally funded research support. These awards are available to investigators in both the School of Medicine and School of Nursing. Applications for this program are reviewed by the Chancellor’s Science Advisory Council, which considers innovation, scientific merit, feasibility, and appropriateness for the Discovery Program. This program has proven to be highly effective in opening new lines of investigation and leading to significant external research funding.
