Virginia KrausVirginia Kraus, MD, PhD, professor of medicine (Rheumatology and Immunology) and pathology, and associate professor of surgery, assumed the role of president of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI), at the World Congress on Osteoarthritis in Philadelphia earlier this month. OARSI is the premier international organization for scientists and health care professionals focused on the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis through the promotion and presentation of research, education and the worldwide dissemination of new knowledge. Musculoskeletal diseases have risen to the second greatest cause of disability across the globe and osteoarthritis is the most prevalent of all musculoskeletal diseases. Dr. Kraus' translational research focuses on elucidating osteoarthritis pathogenesis to discover and validate biomarkers for early osteoarthritis detection, prediction of progression, and monitoring of disease status. Kraus said she looks forward to working with the OARSI board, membership and industry partners to advance treatments for osteoarthritis through closer collaboration with funding agencies and patient advocates around the world.
