Duke faculty experts on Global Health and Africa will hold a week-long series of public events on the continuing Ebola epidemic in West Africa the week of September 22-26, 2014.
Events include conversations, lectures, a live videoconference from Nigeria, and a film screening, and are sponsored by the Africa Initiative, Duke University Center for International Studies (DUCIS), Duke Global Health Institute, and Program in the Arts of the Moving Image.
Anyone interested in learning more about the complex dimensions of the current outbreak should attend.
Sept. 22, 5pm: The Outbreak and the Response
Christopher Woods, professor of medicine (Infectious Diseases) and global health, and Michael Merson, director of the Duke Global Health Institute, will discuss the overall situation in West Africa, how the outbreak started, details about the disease, and the response from the global community. Sept. 23, 5pm: Can Sirleaf Survive Ebola?
Mary H. Moran (Anthropology, Colgate University) will be speaking about the cultural context of the West African countries currently affected, specifically drawing from her expertise in Liberia. Takes place in the Mary Lou Williams Center, Flowers Building.
Sept. 24, 5pm: Desperate People & Circumstances
Philip Rosoff, professor of pediatrics and medicine and director of the Clinical Ethics Program at Duke University Hospital, will speak to the challenges of planning for a pandemic and the ethical implications of untested vaccine use. Takes place in 217 Perkins Library.
Sept. 25, 12pm: Nigeria's First Hand Country Response
Dr. Faisal Shuaib (Incident Manager, Ebola Emergency Operations Center in Nigeria) will be giving a video conference presentation on Nigeria’s first hand country response with managing this pandemic. Takes place in Trent Hall room 040. It also will be livestreamed. Follow this link to join the meeting via WebEx.
Sept. 26, 7pm: Contagion Movie Screening
There will be a showing of the film Contagion (2011; directed by Steven Soderbergh) which follows the fictionalized story of a lethal airborne virus and the attempts to control it. Takes place in 217 Perkins Library.
