From the Director
Hey everyone! Hope you had a good week, despite the ugly last 0.4 seconds of the basketball game. It’s the final week of recruiting coming up, so be sure to take advantage of meeting the future interns at the recruitment dinners. Mark your calendars for the Stead Society draft on Thursday Feb 2 as well! I got some nice emails from attendings this week who were impressed with the work many of you are doing….notables were SAR Vaishali Patel (from Leonor Corsino on endocrine consults) and SAR Emily Rudenat the Pickett Road clinic, kudos to Intern Greg Brown for great work on PAC (sent to me by Matt Roe), and Intern David Lerner recognized for outstanding care on CAD by Cardiology Fellow Christo Swan. JARs Scott Tolan and Shereen Katrak kept us learning and entertained at Chair’s conference this week, with special thanks to Micah McClain, Cam Wolfe and Alan Proia (Pathology) for great discussion. Disseminated toxo with a side of worm infestation doesn’t happen every day, so great to learn from it when we can! I mentioned at Chair’s that we have the opportunity to author the “voice activated power point” lectures for Duke-NUS. Please see the sign-up sheet posted in the med res office, and a separate email to you all with directions on what is expected. This is a great opportunity to contribute some academic product, enhance your CV, learn something valuable and contribute to the Duke NUS curriculum! A special thanks to the residency council for organizing a fellowship application information session. Please see the attached document for details. Fellowship Review List - 2012 Pubmed from the program is pretty deep this week…congrats to all who had posters accepted to the NC ACP meeting.Author | Title | |||

Celebration & "Stead Society Draft"
We are closing in on the end of an enormously successful recruiting season. The list of "thank yous" is almost endless, including our faculty, residents, and staff. I would like to give a special shout out to our Chiefs, leadership team, and especially Emily Strollo for making each day special. On Thursday, February 2, everyone involved in the recruiting this year is invited to join us at the Durham Hilton from 6 - 7 to celebrate! Refreshments and food for all! Then, to cap off the evening, the Stead Society groups will be holding their "Faculty Draft'". The clock will be ticking, music will be playing, and no doubt the excitement will outpace anyone's fantasy draft. Join us for the open celebration from 6-7, and residents - bring your pick lists to the draft! Where: Durham Hilton, 3800 Hillsborough Road, When: Thursday, February 2, 2012, starting at 6:00What Did I Read This Week (by Suzanne Woods, MD)
[box] Infectious Diseases News, Vol 24 – No 12.Dec 2011 [/box] Yes…this is Dr. Woods (Med-Peds) and not Dr. Woods (ID) but a benefit of being married to “the other Dr. Woods” is access to interesting ID journals and mailings. I am a huge proponent of vaccine administration and found several updates in this volume of ID News to share as vaccines are clearly not just for kids.- The FDA backs pneumococcal vaccine in older adults: the 13 valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine has been approved for the prevention of pneumococcal disease in adults aged 50 years and older. It is thought to be effective for 3-5years however there is no booster recommendation at this time. You can refer to CDC MMWR September 3, 2010 / 59(34);1102-1106 for their recommendations.
- The Advisory committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has voted in favor of hepatitis B vaccination for all patients with diabetes younger than 60 years old. These patients are twice as likely as age-matched controls without diabetes to acquire hepatitis B and have greater morbidity and mortality from this infection. (My recommendation: think about Hep B vaccine use in all adults with risk factors!)
- ACIP recommends updates to 2012 adult immunization schedule and this includes the use of Tdap in pregnant women after 20weeks gestation and in adults >65years who are in close contact with an infant ages younger than one year. If not in contact with an infant, the vaccine is optional for older patients. Also, while the FDA recommends herpes zoster vaccine for patients 50yrs and older, the ACIP’s recommendation begins at age 60yo.
- Take advantage of immunizing your patients at every opportunity – outpatient and inpatien

VA PRIME
Kudos go out to Dr. Jason Lappe for a special QI project! He noticed that PRIME patients may miss going to ordered tests after their appointments, sometimes because they get confused about where the tests are done. Dr. Lappe developed an instruction sheet and map for nurses to use when they check out patients to help make sure the tests get done. The nursing staff is thrilled to have this tool, and nurses in other units want to use it now too. Data will be collected to evaluate the efficacy, but if nothing else it has really saved time for nursing staff. Great work, Dr. Lappe!"City of Medicine Academy Mentor Project
