Yale's Patty J. Lee to serve as next chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine

Patty J. Lee, MD, will assume the role of Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, effective April 1, 2019, said Kathleen Cooney, MD, chair of the Department of Medicine.

Dr. Lee is currently Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of Pulmonary Research in the Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. She is an internationally-recognized physician-scientist who studies mechanisms of lung injury and repair, and she has developed genetic and gene-editing approaches in the lung to study critical molecular pathways involved in how lungs respond to and protect themselves against injury.

Lee has an extensive portfolio of NIH grants supporting her laboratory and is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. 

"Dr. Lee has demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting and mentoring her Yale colleagues and training the future generation of physician scientists, and I am certain she will bring that commitment to her role at Duke," said Dr. Cooney.

Cooney noted Lee's vision for building on the strengths of our Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine.

"She will work quickly to implement a plan to ensure its future success in the three missions as well as the continued development and fulfillment of our faculty," said Cooney.

Lee earned her M.D. and a B.A. from Brown University. She completed her residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins University. She joined the Yale faculty in 1998.

Cooney thanked Claude Piantadosi,MD, who has served as interim chief of the division since 2014, and also extended special recognition to Kenneth Schmader, MD, and the other members of the search committee, for their time, effort and commitment in the search process.
