Nomination of Von der Heyden Fellows

By etm18@dhe.duke.edu
Duke University’s Office of Global Strategy and Programs welcomes nominations for individuals to serve as Von der Heyden Fellows. These individuals should be highly prominent international decision makers from such fields as business, government, public life, law, and academics willing to engage with the Duke University community. More specifically, the fellows should:
  • challenge our students and faculty to reach a better understanding of public life which they can incorporate into their learning and teaching and their roles as citizens and societal leaders;
  • offer the fellows the opportunity to step back from the daily flow of their work, to reflect on its relationship to the broader context of cultural, economic, political and societal developments, and to interact with those in the Duke community with expertise in areas of knowledge relevant to their concerns; and
  • foster Duke University’s visibility and reputation in the international community through publicity regarding the fellow’s participation at Duke.
The following criteria will be employed in selecting a fellow: 1. The individual must have international stature within his/her profession, field or discipline and/or be a major figure within his/her national context, with responsibilities or expertise of significant comparative interest; 2. Priority will be given to nominees from or with experience in one or more countries or region of the world or on a global scale; 3. The individual’s expertise and interests should ideally be relevant to students and faculty in two or more of the University’s schools or major academic units, and his/her program while at Duke should be designed to foster cooperation among the faculty and students of the units; 4. The individual should ideally remain on campus for at least three days and may remain as long as a semester; however, under appropriate circumstances of availability and commitment, prominent persons who can stay for less time will be welcome. Nominations should describe how the candidate meets the above criteria, and include a resume or curriculum vitae, a provisional schedule for the candidate’s time on campus, and a provisional budget. A maximum of $50K is generally available for support of a fellow’s visit to Duke. Anyone who would like to make a nomination should send their nomination materials to Carolyn Mackman at carolyn.mackman@dm.duke.edu by Nov. 8, 2013, for internal review prior to submission to Mike Merson. Once reviewed by the School of Medicine, nomination materials should be sent to Michael H. Merson, MD, Vice President and Vice Provost of Global Strategy and Programs, Oct. 1, 2013.
