Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I looked for a supportive residency program that would help me become an excellent clinician. Equally important was a program that valued true diversity and strived to represent in its residency class the population of the state and nation. Additionally, I wanted to join a program that valued family and valued me as a person.

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
The program prepares you to be comfortable taking care of very sick patients. It is a very supportive environment and the faculty is outstanding at teaching house-staff. I appreciate that attendings are young and there is a fair gender ratio asking them.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
Relationships among faculty and house-staff is collegial. In general, they allow senior residents to be the leaders of the team and guide decisions with grace.

About Life in Durham

What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
It’s a small city with a lot of character and things to do. There are plenty of restaurants explore, great beer and cocktail bars, fun hiking spots, and the best coffee micro roastery in the nation.

Where did you choose to live and why?
I live in south Durham in a well established suburban community that is quiet and family oriented. It is accessible to Chapel Hill, downtown Durham, and Raleigh.

What advice would you give to someone looking to move to Durham?
Can’t beat it! It is affordable and there are a number of fun activities to choose from. It is also in the middle of the state and equidistant to the beach and the mountains.

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I love to play soccer and other sports. I enjoy food, coffee, beers and cocktails. Most of all, I love spending my free time hanging out with my little family of three! ;)
