Fellow Perspective

Tell us briefly about your background before fellowship?
I was born and raised in Barbados and moved to Chapel Hill, NC in my junior year of high school. I went to Duke for undergrad and then Columbia for medical school, where I extended my training to pursue an additional year of basic science research as an HHMI fellow. I went back to Duke for this year where I studied allosteric regulation of G-protein coupled receptors in the Lefkowitz lab. I then did my residency training at MGH before heading back to Duke for fellowship.

What are your career plans in cardiology?
I am hoping to pursue a career in academic cardiology, and in particular heart failure and transplant. I am interested in better understanding pulmonary hypertension in this patient population.

Why did you choose Duke for your fellowship training?
I was impressed with the breadth and depth of the clinical experiences afforded to fellows. In addition, there were many opportunities for fellows to get additional training and mentorship in research. Finally, on my interview day I got a sense of community and camaraderie among fellows and faculty that I was excited to be a part of!

What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?
I would recommend thinking carefully about the type of career you envision having after fellowship, and then identifying a program that will provide the experiences and resources necessary to achieve those early career goals.

What do you enjoy doing in the Triangle area outside of work?
I enjoy running and hiking, exploring new restaurants, attending shows at the Durham Performing Arts Center, weekend trips to Asheville and Charlotte, and spending time with my family!
