UNC - Chapel Hill

Where did you attend medical school?
Duke University School of Medicine

If applicable, what other degrees do you hold and from what institution?
MBA from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University

What are your career goals?
I am applying for a fellowship in Cardiology this year! Duke residency has a lot of exposure to cardiology services and my time on consults, the CCUs, and the incredible mentors really made me excited about the field. I’ve also seen the opportunity we have to improve cardiovascular care and bridge the gap between clinical evidence and everyday practice. I hope to impact and improve care delivery on a health system level.

"Faculty are actively engaged in the teaching and development of residents. They've given me the independence to make decisions and learn how to take care of patients, while also being there if I need to go to them."

Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
When looking for residencies, I focused on culture, how invested a program was in its residents, and opportunities it afforded its graduates. For me, Duke fit exactly what I was looking for!

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
Having the chance to go to medical school at Duke, I was able to get a sense of the culture of the program. The family and supportive nature are what really stood out to me. I saw how each resident was a priority and that there were many opportunities to carve out an individualized path. All the residents I worked with as a medical student and met throughout the interview process were extremely friendly and people I wanted to spend time with outside the hospital. I also saw how the program set graduates up to succeed regardless of career path.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
Faculty are actively engaged in the teaching and development of residents. They've given me the independence to make decisions and learn how to take care of patients, while also being there if I need to go to them.

Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
It's been a weird start with COVID and inability to get together with all the interns at once, but I've been able to meet a lot of them though rotations and lunch conferences. Everyone has been very supportive and willing to go above and beyond to help.

About Duke University and Durham

What has surprised you most about Duke?
Seeing just how supportive everyone is in action. Transitioning from medical school to an intern comes with a significant amount of responsibility and everyone has been very helpful in helping ease the transition.

What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
I love how everything is close by and affordable! There are many places to hang out with friends and a variety of good bars and restaurants.

Where did you choose to live and why?
I was able to find a townhome a few miles from the hospital. I wanted to be close to the hospital but also in an area that gave me easy access to the bars and restaurants around.

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I love college basketball - Go Heels! - and enjoy playing basketball and tennis. I've been (very) slowly developing my golf game as well. I enjoy spending my free time with friends, cooking, reading, and watching TV.
