Fellow Perspective

Tell us briefly about your background before cardiology fellowship?
I was raised in Beaverton, Oregon; I came out to Duke for college back in 2009 to join their fencing team. I fell in love with the school’s dedication to both academics and sports, as well as the natural beauty of the Triangle! Even many years beyond my time as an undergrad, I still love talking Duke Basketball with the other fellows and attendings here!

What are your career plans in cardiology?
I plan on pursuing a career in electrophysiology, with a specific focus on leveraging clinical informatics to help health systems improve disease phenotyping, risk stratification, and health care resource allocation to care for patients living with chronic cardiac arrhythmias.

Why did you choose Duke for your cardiology fellowship training?
Duke gave me the opportunity and flexibility to combine a strong traditional cardiology training with less traditional programs in health innovation and informatics to gain the knowledge and skillsets I was motivated to attain during my fellowship training.

What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?
Most programs will have similar schedules and exposure to the different subspecialties of cardiology. Therefore, ask questions about the community—are these the type of people you can see yourself hanging out with after work and are there role models here that you can mirror and seek mentorship from? As we’re all getting older in fellowship as well, it’s important to also find a program and city that allows you the right work-life integration to enable you to build and enrich the other aspects of your life as well!

What do you enjoy doing in the Triangle area outside of work?
We love getting outdoors! Whether it’s taking our Bernedoodle on a hike through Duke Forest or meeting up at a brewery with a couple of friends (Hi-Wire and ZincHouse are our favorites!), a gorgeous day in the Triangle is tough to beat! When long weekends come around, it’s nice to find a cabin to relax up in the Blue Ridge Mountains or drive down to the coast for a weekend of sun and sand!
