Fellow Perspective

Tell us briefly about your background before cardiology fellowship.
I grew up in both Indiana and Massachusetts and ultimately stayed in Indiana for my undergraduate education at Indiana University. I knew I eventually wanted to pursue a career in medicine, but before going to medical school I worked at a start-up biopharmaceutical company in Boston, doing research in drug development. After this, I moved to Charlottesville, VA, where I completed medical school. I decided to pursue training in internal medicine, and during my residency at Duke I was drawn to cardiology by the complex hemodynamics and physiology.

What are your career plans in cardiology?
I plan to pursue subspecialty training in both Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation as well as Interventional Cardiology. My ultimate goal is to provide both clinical and procedural care for the increasingly complex population of patients with heart failure and coronary disease.

Why did you choose Duke for your cardiology fellowship training?
Duke University Hospital is a tertiary and quaternary referral center with a large catchment area, which provides exposure to a wide variety and a high level of illness and therefore makes a great setting for fellowship training. I wanted a cardiology fellowship that was strong both clinically and in research, and one that could (and would) support my endeavors in these realms. I also had the great privilege of knowing the cardiology department from my interface in residency. These are some of the most skilled and accomplished people in the field of cardiology, and they are also humble, approachable, and kind. I think you'll find many who choose to stay here for a long time.  Life here is really good- that's the X factor.

What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?
Take note of the turnout of current fellows on interview day and their interactions with each other; these things are generally a good reflection of the program's culture. I will also add-- the fellowship application process can feel daunting, but don't forget to enjoy the interviews. You will meet some incredible people along the way.

What do you enjoy doing in the Triangle area outside of work?
This area of the country has a beautiful landscape in my opinion, and we experience four seasons (though winter is mild); this makes for great outdoor activities that can be enjoyed year-round. The Eno River is close to my house, so these are my go-to hiking trails. There are numerous James Beard award winning restaurants in the area, and new restaurants are frequently popping up. The art scene is fantastic too, both here in Durham and in Raleigh. The North Carolina Museum of Art's annual Art in Bloom floral exhibition is a must-see. Durham has big city offerings with small town convenience.
