What are your career goals?
I am leaning towards general internal medicine (but still thinking about Infectious Diseases), and hopefully will also work in hospital administration and/or public policy.
Reflections on the Duke Program
What were you looking for in a residency program?
I wanted a place with strong clinical training where I would get to take care of the most complicated patients, but also a place with nice residents! So far Duke has been all of that and more.
Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
I started on the inpatient heme malignancy service, which is a challenging rotation. My co-residents were a daily source of support and there was a definite sense of trying to help each other out, both with work and with outside of the hospital.
What has surprised you most about Duke?
The genuinely kind and supportive people who make up this program, from my co-interns to senior residents to attendings. There is an acknowledgement that residency is hard, and everyone is here to support and help you become the best physician you can be.
About Duke University and Durham
What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
My wife and I adopted a beagle (Tristan) after moving here and we have really enjoyed how dog friendly this area is. There are so many restaurants and breweries with nice outdoor areas where you can bring your dog. It's also really easy to get to natural places like trails and parks. Oh, and the restaurants here are really good.
How does the Triangle appeal to people of diverse backgrounds?
The Triangle has a diverse population, and it seems like there is something for everyone here. It is a nice hybrid of city-town and North-South so it definitely feels like home no matter where you are from originally.
Where did you choose to live and why?
We chose to live in Durham on 9th street. We were moving from Boston which is a pretty walkable city and wanted to be able to walk to a few restaurants and other conveniences.
What advice would you give to someone looking to move to Durham?
Definitely tour apartment buildings in person rather than via FaceTime or Zoom so that you can get a feel for the location.
What are your interests outside of medicine?
I am a big baseball and football fan and am looking for a rec league softball team to join in Durham.
