Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a program that would challenge me through rigorous clinical training, and also where the residents and attendings genuinely got along with & supported each other. I knew I wanted to sub-specialize – but I wasn’t sure into what field – so it was important that I found a program that would set me up for success in whatever subspecialty I chose.

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
The faculty, house staff, and students are incredibly talented & hard-working; we push each other, but there’s a pervasive camaraderie that makes our work that much more enjoyable.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
They’re incredible (across all specialties)! There’s a strong culture of collaboration & humility that leads to unparalleled teaching, patient care, and rapport.

Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
Despite COVID, we’ve connected over Zoom for game nights & had socially distanced gatherings. They’re just as down-to-earth as they are intelligent.

What are your interests outside of medicine?
Running, soccer, board games & fantasy football! Also, during COVID, Amanda (my significant other/co-resident) and I have been getting into tennis!
