Tell us briefly about your background before cardiology fellowship?
I grew up in Hampton Roads, Virginia and studied Biomedical Engineering at UVA. I spent time after graduation working on a global health project in Guatemala before returning to my hometown to attend medical school at EVMS. During medical school I was impacted by my time working with Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) patients and decided to take a journey out west where I completed a Med-Peds residency at the University of Colorado. Along the way, I spent time in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Rwanda working on global health projects.
What are your career plans in cardiology?
I came into cardiology fellowship interested in ACHD and EP. My current career goals include pursuing a fellowship in EP with a specific interest in ACHD patients.
Why did you choose Duke for your cardiology fellowship training?
Duke offered the opportunity to train at a top-tier academic center while being close to home. I was drawn to the excellent training in all facets of cardiology combined with the strong ACHD and EP programs. The faculty seemed very supportive of fellows too, which I’ve experienced to be more than true since arriving here.
What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?
Every program brings a unique set of strengths. Find the programs that have the opportunities to support your interests with the faculty and staff willing to help you pursue those interests.
What do you enjoy doing in the Triangle area outside of work?
One of the hidden gems of Durham is how close nature is around every corner. I enjoy trail running on the trails of Eno State Park, Duke Forest, Falls Lake, etc. I also enjoy trying the many great restaurants and finding local produce at one of the near-by farms or weekly farmers market.
