Fellow Perspective

Tell us briefly about your background before cardiology fellowship?
I was born and raised in San Francisco. After finishing my undergraduate years at UC Davis, I spent a year in rural Kentucky working on a CDC community transformation project before returning home for medical school at UCSF. I had developed an interest in health policy and chose to pursue a Master in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School during medical school. I then completed my residency and chief resident year at Cedars Sinai where I became interested in heart transplant and worked on a number of research projects related to transplant outcomes and transplant immunology.

What are your career plans in cardiology?
I plan to complete my cardiology training with a fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure/Transplant and ultimately work at an academic center with both a clinical and research focus on heart transplant.

Why did you choose Duke for your cardiology fellowship training?
I choose Duke for the broad exposure to cardiology, the opportunity to care for the sickest patients in the region, and to work with a very friendly, welcoming group of fellows and faculty. Also, with my interest in advanced heart failure, Duke is a unique place to train as we lead in both transplant and LVAD volume.

What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?
While you may have your heart set on one specific area of cardiology, know that this may change and be sure to pick a program (like Duke) with expertise across all of the different cardiology subspecialties.

What do you enjoy doing in the Triangle area outside of work?
Outside of the hospital, I enjoy exploring the local hiking trails and the many parks around Durham with my wife and kids.
