Fellow Perspective
Tell us briefly about your background before cardiology fellowship?
I grew up in Northwest Ohio. I am the oldest of three brothers and my mom is a proficient flute player. My dad and grandfather were both family physicians in our town, so I was exposed to the world of medicine early on. I attended the University of Notre Dame for undergrad. Following that, I went to New York City for medical school at Weill Cornell and later pursued my Internal Medicine and Chief residency in here at Duke.
What are your career plans in cardiology?
I plan on being an academic cardiologist with board certifications in general cardiology and critical care medicine. I am also getting level 3 echo with an interest in developing skills in advanced imaging (structural TEE, etc.) beneficial for a cardiac intensivist.
Why did you choose Duke for your cardiology fellowship training?
I chose Duke for my cardiology fellowship training because of its unparalleled balance of clinical excellence, mentorship, and personalized training. The program's flexibility allows fellows to tailor their training to align with their specific interests, whether it be advanced imaging, critical care, research, etc. and has the infrastructure and expertise get world class training in any area. Equally important, as a resident I was able to the see the awesome relationships between fellows and faculty. The approachable faculty not only serve as mentors but also take a genuine interest in fellows' growth and success. Meanwhile, the camaraderie among fellows creates an environment of mutual learning and support.
What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?
Look at how the fellows interact across years as I think that is a great way to understand the collegiality of the program! Have an idea of what you want to do and why with your career but also appreciate that can change during fellowship.
What do you enjoy doing in the Triangle area outside of work?
I love spending time outdoors in the Triangle! Whether that is playing golf, playing in our soccer leagues, going to beer garden with our dog, or walking the numerous trails there is something for everyone. There is a great collection of restaurants and coffee shops. The collection of Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh provides an awesome trio of big city, college and smaller town vibes that I really enjoy. Life in the hospital can be hard, life outside the hospital here is easy.
