Fellow Perspective

Tell us briefly about your background before fellowship?
I grew up in Overland Park, Kansas and was recruited to play baseball in college at Baylor University.  I completed my medical school training at the University of Missouri where I met my wife.  I matched at Duke for my residency in Internal Medicine and have been here ever since!

What are your career plans in cardiology?
I plan to pursue a career in interventional cardiology.

Why did you choose Duke for your fellowship training?
Duke affords the unique opportunity for fellows to learn from and train alongside leaders in cardiovascular medicine who are committed to both providing world class care for patients and teaching the next generation of cardiologists.  There is a strong emphasis on mentorship and support in academic endeavors within the fellowship program that contribute to an ideal training environment.  Additionally, as a large tertiary center serving a diverse patient population, Duke provides exposure to clinical volume and complexity essential to a robust training environment.

What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?
Think about who you want to train with throughout fellowship.  Invest your time into getting to know some of the current fellows and try to gain an idea of what your life will look like as a fellow in each program.

What do you enjoy in the Triangle area outside of work?
The weather here really allows for a lot of outdoor activities.  My wife and I have enjoyed exploring the local restaurant and brewery scene.  When we need a change of pace, the mountains are a few hours to the west and the beach is a few hours to the east allowing for easy and convenient weekend trips.
