What are your career goals?
I love MedEd, so I would love to practice in a setting where I could teach medical students and residents! In terms of specialties, I'm very open.

Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was hoping to be at an academic center with a high volume of medically complex patients. Most importantly though, I was looking for a friendly culture where I felt I could make friends and genuinely be happy. I'm really fortunate to have found all of this at Duke!

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
As someone told me when I was looking at programs, "Duke is a great place for people who take medicine seriously but don't take themselves too seriously." I definitely agree with that statement. The program leadership is very approachable, and I feel genuinely cared for as a person (not just a resident)!

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
I'm honestly amazed by how approachable and kind the faculty have been. As an intern, I feel like the expectations have been to work hard and do right by my patients rather than to know minutiae about treatment plans. The faculty here really do meet you at your level and genuinely want to teach and make you a better doctor.

Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
I'm very fortunate that my class of co-interns has so many people that plan events/get-togethers for all of us. It's really helped us get to know each other! In terms of connecting with the other interns/residents, I honestly haven't had to try too hard. I feel like I can be myself and I feel accepted as I am!

What has surprised you most about Duke?
When I was a fourth-year medical student, a resident I admire told me "don't ever work somewhere that makes you feel like you have to change who you are to be a doctor." Duke has really lived up to this for me. I feel like I can be my own version of a doctor rather than trying to fit an unrealistic mold of who people think I should be.

About Life in Durham

What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
The natural beauty! When I moved here for residency, it was my first time in North Carolina ever. I'm still amazed by how scenic a drive to the mall can be. I also like that Durham still feels like the South (I was in Texas for a long time before moving here)! It has the amenities of a large city, but maintains a smaller-town vibe.

How does the Triangle appeal to people of diverse backgrounds?
I think the many job opportunities, the proximity of academic institutions and reasonable cost-of-living attracts people from diverse backgrounds.

What advice would you give to someone looking to move to Durham?
I would reach out to current residents and ask them about their experiences living in different areas.

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I love reading (fantasy, romance, non-fiction), writing, obsessing over my dog Paco and running/yoga. Most importantly, I love using my free time to catch up with friends and family.
