Fellow Perspective:
Tell us briefly about your background before cardiology fellowship?
I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. I attended college at the University of Chicago, where I was able to embrace my nerdiness to the fullest. I took 2 gap years working in Baltimore at a cancer genomics biotech startup, but wanted to work with patients directly as a physician. I attended Emory University for medical school and stayed for residency, where I discovered my passion for clinical research and pursued a master’s degree under the wonderful mentorship of Dr. Alanna Morris. I fell in love with cardiology when I was able to see my research interests in heart failure merge with clinical practice firsthand.
What are your career plans in cardiology?
I am planning to pursue a career in academic cardiology and am interested in advanced training in heart failure. I am interested in strengthening my clinical research skills and would like to run clinical trials when I grow up.
Why did you choose Duke for your cardiology fellowship training?
I chose Duke because of the unique balance of exceptional clinical training and commitment to research. Since joining Duke, I have found that every attending wears multiple hats and has an impressive variety in their clinical and research day-to-day, which is how I would like my career to look one day. I know that after training at this program, I will have the flexibility and experience to decide how I want to practice cardiology and what I want to dedicate my focus on, wherever I land.
What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?
Talk to people who have gone through the process and get a sense of their thoughts on their fellowship program! It can be easy to forget all the details of an interview day but having a point of reference from in the program provides extremely valuable insight.
What do you enjoy doing in the Triangle area outside of work?
I have two cats who are very loyal to my partner and are very annoyed by my manhandling. I love horror movies, bad reality TV, and reading fiction novels. I am still exploring the Research Triangle, but so far have enjoyed the abundance of comedy shows and musical performances in Durham and nearby Raleigh.
