Tell us briefly about your background before embarking on your medical training.

In college I thought I was going to be a tropical field biologist and spent my summers in the forests of Borneo, but when I graduated I decided to stick closer to home and worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention doing community health work in central California. While working for the CDC, I decided I wanted to go into medicine and did a post-bacc at UC Berkeley before coming to Duke for medical school.

Outline your career plans in Gastroenterology:

I’m on the research track and look forward to crafting a career in academic medicine combining community-based research with teaching and clinical work. Within GI, I am interested in Hepatology but remain open to the possibilities!

What were you looking for in a fellowship program?

I was looking for a fellowship program that would provide me with a supportive community to pursue my interests in a place where my husband and I were excited to live.  Duke has all of that and I am grateful to be here!

From your experience in fellowship, what have you learned about training at Duke?

I have spent a lot of time at Duke from medical school to fellowship. I think Duke has a culture that attracts people that work hard but don’t take themselves too seriously.

How is your life in the Triangle outside of work?

I absolutely love living in the Triangle! My husband is in Emergency Medicine at UNC and there is so much this area has to offer from great outdoors, to wonderful food and events. We’ve stayed for so long because it is such a wonderful place to live!

What is your favorite restaurant in Durham?

Oakleaf in Carrboro!
