What were you looking for in a fellowship program?

The hallmark of a fellowship that stands above the rest is the presence of happy, successful, and fulfilled fellows. Excellent mentorship, broad clinical exposure, patient diversity, and robust research opportunities are required for a successful program, but fellows also need an environment of collegiality that cultivates energy, teamwork, and enterprise. When I looked at both residency and fellowship programs, one of the questions I always asked myself was "am I excited to work with these people?" and "does this program create an environment that I would be sad to miss out on?". When I interviewed at Duke the answer to both of these questions was yes.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and fellows?

My first observations have been that faculty are incredibly approachable and engaged in fellows education, career development, and well being.
