Fellow Perspective
Tell us briefly about your background before cardiology fellowship?
I was born and raised in the Boston area and attended college at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Afterward, I moved to Seattle, WA, and worked at Fred Hutch Cancer Center doing basic science research for a few years. I attended Johns Hopkins for medical school and went on to complete my internal medicine residency at UT Southwestern. I was drawn to cardiology during my CCU rotations at Parkland Hospital, as well as during my time conducting exercise physiology research at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine.
What are your career plans in cardiology?
I plan to do advanced training in interventional cardiology and advanced heart failure/transplant.
Why did you choose Duke for your cardiology fellowship training?
I chose Duke for the strength of its clinical and research training. The department is very well-balanced, offering excellent training and ample volume across all cardiology subspecialties. Since being here, what I have appreciated the most is the people. The culture of the department is amazing, and I feel very fortunate to work with and learn from the faculty, staff, and my amazing co-fellows.
What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?
When considering fellowship programs, I would say that “fit” becomes a much more important factor than it is for residency. There can be significant variations in volume and the breadth of experience/opportunities across cardiology subspecialties from program to program. Finding a place where you are not only happy but also able to gain the skills and mentorship needed to set yourself up for success in the next phase of your career is an important consideration.
What do you enjoy doing in the Triangle area outside of work?
I enjoy exploring the many outdoor activities and restaurants/breweries the Triangle has to offer with my wife and our dog. We also love attending off-Broadway shows at DPAC and shopping for food at the NC State Farmers Market in Raleigh. The combination of access to the outdoors, affordability, and entertainment can’t be overstated!
