Fellow Perspective

Tell us briefly about your background before cardiology fellowship.
I grew up in both Northern and Southern California. After finishing my undergraduate studies, I coached high school basketball and track and field for two years and also spent a year as a full-time middle and high school teacher. During medical school at UCI, my wife and I had our first daughter, and our second daughter was born during residency. My desire to specialize in cardiology started in medical school and was solidified during residency while caring for patients at Parkland, the county hospital for the Dallas region.

What are your career plans in cardiology?
I plan to pursue advanced training in electrophysiology and am interested in sports cardiology.

Why did you choose Duke for your cardiology fellowship training?
Duke offers first-class clinical training and research opportunities. I was impressed with the collaborative spirit and commitment to mentorship and education from the faculty, which was evident during my interview day. I continue to be impressed with the faculty and my co-fellows here at Duke as they are dedicated to providing excellent cardiovascular care.

What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?
I would look for a program that promotes clinical excellence and has supportive faculty that challenge you to achieve your goals.

What do you enjoy doing in the Triangle area outside of work?
My family and I love visiting the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, which is a great place to see wildlife and explore science. We live in Cary and enjoy the many parks and Greenways around our home. My wife and I also like taking our kids to the beach which is only a two hour drive away.
