Department of Medicine Faculty Promotion Celebration

Dear Department of Medicine Community, 

Last week, the Duke Department of Medicine (DOM) held its inaugural Faculty Promotion Celebration. DOM faculty and staff celebrated more than 130 faculty promoted in rank between July 1, 2023, and October 1, 2024. It was a fantastic event and allowed division chiefs to personally share how valuable and impactful the honored faculty are to the department and division as we collectively move medicine forward. 

It was a heartwarming sight to see so many of our faculty members come together to celebrate their outstanding accomplishments. This event not only provided a platform for recognition but also fostered a sense of community and connection, allowing us to meet new colleagues, engage with senior leaders, and strengthen our bonds within the department. 

Since my arrival at Duke, I have seen an increase in the number of faculty promotions. This would not be possible without the dedicated work our Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs, Dr. Andy Alspaugh, and the Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure (APT) team have done to improve our promotion process. The new process, which began last year, has not only shortened the wait time from submission to approval but also heightened the awareness of the promotion process and ensures fairness and equity for all.  

At the celebration, Vice Chair of Faculty Development Dr. Carla Brady reminded us that the term “promotion” stems from the Latin word “promovere”  which means 'move forward.’ This simple yet powerful meaning underscores the incorporation of personal growth and development in faculty promotions. This is a significant milestone in your career, a recognition of the impact you bring to patient care, training physician leaders, and advancing scientific knowledge. It is a testament to your dedication and hard work, and we deeply appreciate your many contributions.
