From the Director

Thank you to everyone for getting your schedule request forms in for 2023-24.  We are sorting through everything now in preparation for schedule building once recruitment is over at the end of January!

One of the best noon conferences of the year is happening this week! Get ready for the 3rd Annual DUKE IT OUT on Wednesday at noon! Come see your super SARs Sukrit Jain, Harsh Patolia and Komal Safdar battle for the teaching crown!

Applying for fellowship? Get ready for fellowship prep meetings – Dr Hargett and I will host the informational meetings on FEB 2nd and FEB 9th at 7 pm.  Details to follow … the meetings are the same content, so plan to attend only one.  Can’t make it at all? There is an informational packet as well that will be available to everyone applying.

Dept of Med Clinical Research Fair for Residents and Fellows

This event is being held on the 6th floor of Trent Semans on Wednesday, January 25th at 2 open sessions: 8:30-10 am and 1-2:30 pm. the sessions are the same, we just wanted to give some flexibility on attending.

The main purpose of the fair is to connect DOM faculty, fellows, residents and trainees to resources available to them at Duke. I really think this is a great way for residents to figure out what is out there – which is probably the #1 concern raised for research at Duke—Where do I start?

Some contributors to the event include central support staff from the DOM CRUs (Medicine, Heart Center and DCI) like your Assistant Research Practice Managers (ARPMs) and Research Practice Managers (RPMs), and finance leadership. Other SOM resources represented include staff from OASIS, contracts and DOMRA, CTSI resources, CRU statisticians, several DOCR directors including clinical operations, data, PACE, DEPRU and Research@Pickett.

We will have our grant writing support from DOM and SOM as well.

We are asking for people to register so we can get a head count for refreshments. We will be providing light breakfast food, coffee and juice in the morning session and after-lunch snacks for the afternoon session. Additionally, all attendees will be entered into a drawing for a Starbucks gift card.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Prioritized GME appts are now available also at 6 pm and 7 pm! For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
