The School of Medicine Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (OEDI) during its monthly EDI leaders group meeting March 25, 2023, heard about a process for helping each department, center, or institute reflect on strategic plans.
Vice Dean Thomas described this reflection as thinking at a higher level than the tactics we often pursue – specific educational programs, metrics, and resources. We’re asked to reflect on our priorities at a higher level. Does our unit want to focus on education, culture, recruitment and retention, promotion and career development, recognition and celebration, health equity, community engagement? Do we want to focus on trainees, faculty, staff?
I think most units will say “all of the above”. The challenge will be narrowing our focus to the highest priorities in the near term while planning for additional priorities over the long term.
OEDI will provide some resources and guidance and will stimulate conversation across units. This effort is entirely consistent with on-going strategic planning being led by our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Antiracism (DEIAR) committee, with broad engagement across the Department. The Office for Faculty Development and Diversity, DEIAR Committee, MRRC, and PWIM will continuously see input on this “reflection”.
