Educational Didactics

  • Palliative Care Grand Rounds: This weekly interdisciplinary conference, the primary educational activity for the Duke Palliative Care community, includes case presentations, didactic lectures and ethics conferences. Weekly Mondays, 12-1 p.m., by Zoom link or Duke Hospital North Room 1103, Chair's Suite
  • Core Curriculum: Early in the fellowship, fellows attend a series of faculty lectures covering key topics in palliative medicine. This acquaints fellows with the faculty and provides a foundation of knowledge for clinical rotations.  These lectures take place during the academic half-day on Thursday afternoons.
  • Longitudinal Curriculum: Following completion of the Core Curriculum fellows attend didactic lectures throughout the year which comprehensively cover essential topics in hospice and palliative medicine. These lectures take place during the academic half-day on Thursday afternoons.
  • Pediatric Palliative Care Curriculum: A series of lectures built into the Pediatric Quality of Life rotation for the Pediatric Palliative Medicine fellow and open to other fellows based on interest.
  • Vital Talk: Intensive communication skills training retreat with Geriatric Medicine Fellows.

  • Palliative Care Self-Care Curriculum: Fellows participate in monthly fellow-only discussion groups facilitated by a clinical psychologist with expertise in the field. 
  • Clinical Interdisciplinary Conference: Interdisciplinary team meetings on the various clinical services include continuing education and discussions of the structures, processes, and policies of clinical services and teamwork.
  • Curricula offered through the Division of Geriatric Medicine
    • Combined Geriatric & Palliative Medicine teaching sessions: These 2-hour interactive teaching sessions held throughout the year for Geriatrics Fellows each focus on core topics in hospice and palliative medicine for older adults. Palliative Medicine Fellows attend relevant teaching sessions.
