3/23/18: NCI director to present at Medicine Grand Rounds

Ned Sharpless, MD, director of the National Cancer Institute, will present at Medicine Grand Rounds on Fri., March 23 at 8 a.m. in Duke North Room 2002.

Dr. Sharpless is the Joseph C. Greenfield Visiting Professor. His presentation is "The Dynamic Interplay between Aging and Cancer."

Sharpless was officially sworn in as the 15th director of the National Cancer Institute on October 17, 2017. Prior to his appointment, he served as the director of the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, a position he held since January 2014. 

In addition to his role at NCI, Sharpless continues his research in understanding the biology of the aging process that promotes the conversion of normal self-renewing cells into dysfunctional cancer cells. He has made seminal contributions to the understanding of the relationship between aging and cancer, and in the preclinical development of novel therapeutics for melanoma, lung cancer, and breast cancer.
