Six Department of Medicine faculty were recognized with awards at the School of Medicine's annual Spring Faculty Meeting on May 9. The recipients are:
Kevin Thomas, MD, associate professor of medicine (Cardiology), received the first Michelle P. Winn Inclusive Excellence Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to diversity and inclusion within the Duke School of Medicine community. Andrew Alspaugh, MD, professor of medicine (Infectious Diseases), received the Gordon G. Hammes Faculty Teaching Award, which is intended to recognize continuing excellence in teaching and mentoring, and exemplary commitment to the education of graduate students within Basic Science Departments and Graduate Training Programs of the School of Medicine. The nominees and winners are selected by a graduate student committee.
Ebony Boulware, MD, MPH, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine, received the Research Mentoring Award for clinical science research. The Research Mentoring Awards were established in 2009 to recognize faculty members in the Schools of Medicine and Nursing with excellence in research mentoring.
Peter Kussin, MD, professor of medicine (Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine), received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, which is designed to recognize compassion and sensitivity in the delivery of healthcare. This award is presented annually to a faculty member who demonstrates outstanding compassion in the delivery of care; respect for patients, their families, and healthcare colleagues; as well as demonstrated clinical excellence.
Christopher Granger, MD, professor of medicine (Cardiology), received the Excellence in Professionalism Award, which recognizes the importance of promoting ethical and professional behavior within our community. This award is presented annually to a faculty member who exemplifies professionalism and personifies Duke’s guiding principles of respect, trustworthiness, diversity, teamwork, and learning.
Anthony Galanos, MD, professor of medicine (Geriatrics), received the Master Clinician/Teacher Award, which honors individuals with superlative accomplishment and service in the areas of clinical care and teaching. Awards are given to recognize clinical practitioners who exemplify the highest standards of clinical care, pedagogy, and professionalism or to basic scientists who achieve distinction in pedagogy and professionalism.
